A less vocal group are the social media naysayers:\u00a0&#8220;Social media is nothing but a bubble,&#8221; these people claim, &#8220;it&#8217;ll crash in no time!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, who&#8217;s right?<\/p>\n<p>Are the social media advocates right?  Is social media really the advertising platform of the future?  Or maybe the traditional crowd is in the green, and social media is a nothing but a blip that will inevitably burst.<\/p>\n<p>To determine the benefits of social media advertising I took Facebook Ads to the chopping board.  With a multi-thousand dollar budget, I ran an experiment.  How did it hold up?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/adcontrarian.blogspot.com\/2011\/04\/test-your-online-advertising-knowledge.html\">According to the Ad Contrarian blog<\/a>, the average CTR of all Facebook ads is a paltry 0.05% (meaning, on a random Facebook ad, only 5 in 10,000 people would click).  This assumption&#8211;along with a few more said by national account executives and social media experts at the <a href=\"http:\/\/l2facebookclinic.eventbrite.com\/\">L2 Facebook Clinic<\/a>&#8211;would be scrutinized.<\/p>\n<p>Some assumptions tested:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0acquisition\u00a0per fan on Facebook Ads is about $1 (meaning, if you want 10,000 new fans and do not push it organically, you should spend $10,000 dollars!)<\/li>\n<li>The average CTR for a Facebook Ads flight is 0.05%<\/li>\n<li>Ads grow stale quickly, so run them over a short period of time<\/li>\n<li>You <em>need<\/em> Facebook Ads to have a successful page presence<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The ads ran for an established Facebook fan page with a few thousand fans. Before the ads, I recorded the fan numbers every day at 11 am or 1 pm to get a solid base reading for average follower growth per 24 hours. \u00a0Additionally, I recorded two separate weeks to make sure the growth one week wasn\u2019t an anomaly caused by abnormally high traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, I recorded the numbers for our fan growth during the Facebook Ads run.\u00a0 We started the ad flight at 10 am on 4\/19, and we ended it at 11:45 pm on 4\/21.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a chart with the amount of fans at a specific time, before and after the ads ran:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chart1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chart1-500x75.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"chart1\" width=\"500\" height=\"75\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chart1-500x75.png 500w, https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chart1.png 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, we posted much higher growth with our ad run.\u00a0 We saw about a 0.9% increase day-to-day without the ads running, but with the ads running with saw a 3.1% increase in fans (triple the amount we normally would!).\u00a0 Here\u2019s a graph below charting the differences in growth:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_649\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-649\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/fangrowthfb2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-649\" title=\"fangrowthfb2\" src=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/fangrowthfb2-500x265.png\" alt=\"The growth rate increases rapidly as the Facebook Ads are used.\" width=\"500\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/fangrowthfb2-500x265.png 500w, https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/fangrowthfb2.png 584w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The growth rate increases rapidly as the Facebook Ads are used.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Furthermore, these are the granular numbers while we were running the ads campaign.\u00a0 As you can see, we were achieving the same increase in followers in 8 hours with the ads on as we were in 24 hours without running the ads.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>So, we were acquiring new fans for about $0.87 each\u2014a bit under Facebook\u2019s average (outlined above), but still expensive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11px; line-height: normal;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chart2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-674\" title=\"chart2\" src=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/chart2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"447\" height=\"72\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To accomplish these numbers, we ran five ads with recommended CPCs.\u00a0 This is what the ad looked like after 7 hours in:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_663\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-663\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/7hrsin2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-663\" title=\"7hrsin2\" src=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/7hrsin2-500x58.png\" alt=\"High CTRs and social rate at the beginning of the ad flight as users are intrigued by the new ads.\" width=\"500\" height=\"58\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/7hrsin2-500x58.png 500w, https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/7hrsin2-1024x120.png 1024w, https:\/\/dmkthinks.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/7hrsin2.png 1416w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-663\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">High CTRs and social rate at the beginning of the ad flight as users are intrigued by the new ads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As mentioned, the average CTR for all ads across Facebook is 0.05% (yup, that low).\u00a0 7 hours in, we were are a 0.15% CTR.\u00a0 The social percentage, or the percentage of people who saw an ad that at least one of their friends liked, was nearly 70%.\u00a0 The most successful ads were targeted to a relatively small niche: those people who had friends connected to one of our other fan pages, but were not connected themselves.\u00a0 The ad targeted to a larger demographic didn\u2019t fair nearly as well.\u00a0 Although counter-intuitive, we were seeing more impressions and clicks by targeting\u00a0<em>less<\/em> people (i.e. being more specific with our targeting).<\/p>\n<p>Although still successful, over the next 65 hours, we saw the numbers decrease rapidly (which proves the point that Facebook ads get stale very, very quickly).
